Every year, The New York Times releases its list of the 50 best restaurants in the United States. For months, eight food editors for the Times have traveled across the country in search of the best places to eat. “We tried to think about, What are the places that make us excited to go out to eat in America right now?” says editor Priya Krishna on the process.
Using that as their guiding light, Krishna and her colleagues ate more than 400 meals in dozens of American cities before narrowing down the list to 50 restaurants in 12 states, Puerto Rico and Washington D.C.

Lucian Books and Wine — Atlanta, GA
Named for British painter Lucian Freud (grandson of Sigmund) this upscale restaurant comes with a bonus bookshop for you to peruse before or after your French, Spanish and Italian-inspired meal.
Apteka — Pittsburgh, PA
Inspired by co-owner Tomasz Skowronski’s childhood visiting family in Warsaw, Apteka stands out amongst Pittsburgh’s many Eastern European restaurants in one key way: it’s the only one that’s 100% vegan.
Leeward — Portland, ME
Portland, Maine boasts some of the best restaurants in the country, and Leeward is no exception. Their menu features the chef and owners’ love of fresh pasta, seasonal produce and local seafood.
The Musket Room — New York, NY
Executive chef Mary Attea’s menu is globally inspired, “borrowing ideas from Spain, Lebanon, Japan or anywhere else she feels like roaming.” Diners can choose a casual experience at the bar or indulge in the $109 full tasting menu.
Petite León — Minneapolis, MN
Inspired by chef Jorge Guzmán’s upbringing in the Yucatán, Petite León’s menu elevates traditional dishes from the region with dishes like al pastor pork collar and ancho chile-black garlic marinated bavette steak.
Sister — Dallas, TX
Sister’s “grandma’s dining room” atmosphere is accompanied by dishes described as Italian-ish by Krishna. Traditional Italian dishes are given a new twist with unexpected ingredients, like the buckwheat noodles in a parmesan cream sauce.
